Following a number of reports by local media outlets, Swindon Clinical Commissioning Group has provided an update on changes to services at the Swindon NHS Health Centre.

“As previously shared, we are reviewing the walk-in service provided from the Swindon NHS Health Centre in Islington Street, with a view to offer an alternative model of care that will improve access to urgent and same day healthcare services in Swindon.

“Demand for healthcare across Swindon is increasing and, to ensure local people receive the best possible care, we must ensure we have the right services in the right places.

"At this time, we know people use the Walk-in Centre for a wide range interventions, such as blood tests and wound dressings, which are not necessarily urgent and could have been arranged through a pre-booked appointment.

“We are currently meeting staff - whom we know are concerned about the impact on them and the patients they see - to ensure they are well briefed and communicated with.

"Importantly, over the next few weeks, we will be meeting patients who attend the Walk-in Centre to hear from them as to why they have chosen, or indeed been signposted to, the Walk-in-Centre to better understand their needs.

“To support this, we are developing a range of material to ensure local people have clear information about the local healthcare services available and how to access them.

“For urgent medical problems outside of GP opening hours, people should continue to phone NHS 111 outside to secure a face-to-face appointment at the NHS Swindon Health Centre.

“Swindon’s Children’s Clinic will continue to offer appointments for children aged between three months and 18 years, at the Swindon NHS Health Centre. Appointments can be booked by calling 0300 111 0088.

“Medvivo does provide on-the-day urgent primary care services at the Swindon NHS Health Centre, which can be booked through a patient’s GP practice, but does not provide a walk in service and has not been commissioned to do so.

"Appointments with the GP out-of-hours service and services for Swindon’s homeless population are not affected and these will be provided by Medvivo.”
