What does Swindon look like?

A town that is constantly evolving and developing, Swindon's population is one of the fastest growing in the whole of the UK. 

In fact, according to the most recent Census, the number of people living in Swindon and the surrounding areas, such as Shrivenham, is expected to rise by 14 per cent before 2021 and a further 10 per cent in the years leading up to 2031. 

Some key facts about the health of the people who live in Swindon can be seen below:

  • The number of people living in Swindon who are aged over 75 and 85 has risen more than that of any other age group
  • Around 15 per cent of people in the town have been diagnosed with a long term condition, such as asthma, diabetes or cardiovascular disease
  • There are around double the number of people from a minority background living in the town than there were 10 years ago
  • Life expectancy among people from the most and least deprived areas of Swindon has increased in recent years
  • On average, men from more deprived backgrounds die around seven years earlier than those from more affluent areas, whereas women from a deprived background die around four years earlier than those who are not
  • People living in Swindon can expect to live longer than those in other similar sized towns and cities 
  • The average life expectancy in Swindon is 79.3 years for a male and 82.8 years for a female
  • In almost all areas of health, people in Swindon usually perform above the national average
