Sometimes, following an initial consultation with a GP, patients can be referred to hospital to see a specialist.

This is often so further tests and investigations can be arranged or for the patient to have the chance to discuss their condition with a healthcare professional who has a particular interest in that area of medicine.

Information for patients

Visiting hospital or a meeting a new doctor for the first time can cause worry for some people.

If you have been referred to a specialist and have concerns about what will happen next, read the information leaflet below which explains the referral process and what patients can expect when going to hospital.
