When seeking medical help, local people should always phone NHS 111 first, instead of self-diagnosing or worrying about which service is the most appropriate.

NHS 111

NHS 111 is the easy way to get the right help, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Trained health advisers will ask callers a series of questions, before either:

  • Signposting to a local NHS service
  • Connecting the person to a nurse, emergency dentist, pharmacist of GP
  • Arranging a face-to-face appointment with a local NHS service (where appropriate)
  • Offering advice on self-care

NHS 111 can direct people to, or arrange an appointment with, the right local NHS service.

This includes the Urgent Care Centre at the Great Western Hospital, dedicated children's clinics in Swindon and local pharmacies.

More information can be found on the NHS 111 website by clicking here

Stay well

People are also encouraged to do all they can to keep themselves well, through simple measures like getting the flu jab, keeping warm and staying active.

Additionally, people should look out for older friends, relatives and neighbours, and encourage those more vulnerable people to always seek help before their condition becomes worse.

Pharmacists can offer clinical advice, over-the-counter medicine and provide information on other local NHS services.

Book a GP appointment

Wherever possible, it's always best to plan ahead when booking an appointment at a GP practice, with many now offering slots in the evenings and at weekends.

If your GP practice is closed, call NHS 111 to find out where to go for alternative care and treatment.

Book an appointment at a Children's Clinic

For babies, children and young people, call 0300 111 0088.

An adviser will arrange a face-to-face appointment at a clinic in Swindon.

Call 999 or visit the Emergency Department at the Great Western Hospital

Emergency services, such as 999 and hospital emergency departments, are for serious medical conditions, in which there is a genuine threat to life.

  • the right to express a preference for using a particular doctor
  • the right to choose which hospital to go to when referred by a GP for specialist care and treatment
  • the right to be involved in all personal healthcare decisions
